Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level names remained online.
